Names for God in the Old Testament

God was referred to in the Old Testament in the following names.

  1. Elohim the everlasting God. At creation: Genesis 1:1. Abraham called on the name of the Lord the everlasting God. Genesis 21:33-34.

  2. El Elyon the Most High God. Abraham addressing Melchizedek King of Salem. Genesis 14:18-20,22.

  3. Yahweh Yireh. The God who sees. Jahweh will provide. Genesis 22:14.

  4. El Shaddai the most frequently used. Usually translated “God Almighty”. Genesis 17:1, 28:3, 35:11, 48:3.

  5. El Shaddai also used in the book of Job 30 times beginning with Job 5:17-19. El Shaddai emphasizes the supernatural work of His grace as He deals with His creation including those He loves and calls according to His purpose.

  6. The Lord. “God spoke to Moses and said I am the Lord.” Exodus 6:2. The Lord is used in many Old Testament verses.

  7. God Almighty & Jehovah. “God appeared to Abraham, Isaac & Jacob by the name God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah I was not known to them.” Exodus 6:3-4&6.

  8. Elohim is a name for God in the Hebrew Bible. It is a term for Deity designating God as our Creator. It is used many times in the Old Testament.

  9. Adonai means my Sovereign Lord and Master. It emphasizes the Lordship of God.

  10. Example of Hebrew names for God: Joshua 7:7…And Joshua said, alas, O Lord [Adoni] God [Jehovah] wherefore hast Thou brought these people over Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God [Elohim] we had been content to dwell on the other side of Jordan. Used again after God empowers Joshua and the army of Israel to defeat the Amorites, “Joshua built an alter unto the Lord [Adoni] God [Jehovah] of Israel in mount Ebal. Joshua 8:30.
