Abraham to sacrifice Isaac

God’s promise to Abraham of a son Isaac. Genesis 17.

  1. God establishes The Abrahamic covenant. vs. 1-8.

  2. Sarah to bear a son and be a mother of nations. vs. 15-16.

  3. Abraham’s response: fell on his face and laughed… vs 17.

  4. Abraham pleads for Ishmael the son of Hagar, Sarah’s maid. vs. vs. 18.

  5. God said “Sarah shall bear thee a son…and I will establish my covenant with him & his seed…Ishmael I have blessed and his seed. vs. 19-20.

  6. IN ISAAC SHALL THY SEED BE CALLED. Romans 9:6-8.

God again appears to Abraham to confirm that Sarah will conceive and give birth to Isaac when God returns. Genesis Ch. 18.

  1. Three men visit Abraham (the pre-incarnate Christ & 2 angels). Abraham hosts them. vs.1-5.

  2. Sarah is in the tent and hears the promise to Abraham that the Lord will return when she deliver a son. vs. 9-11.

  3. Sarah laughed. vs. 12.

  4. The Lord’s reply…”Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Sarah denies she laughed. vs. 13-15.

The Son of Promise arrives. Genesis 21:1-12.

  1. The promise in Genesis 18:14 fullfilled at the appointed time. vs.1-3. This was 40 years after Ur of the Chaldes, 25 years after Haran, 15 years after Ishmael was born.

  2. Conditions to be met before Isaac was born: Abraham needed to learn total reliance on God. Sarah’s faith needed establishing, Isaac’s birth was to be miraculous.

God’s purpose was to distinguish between seed by the flesh and seed of the Promise. Galatians 4:21-31.

  1. Analogy of Hagar & Ishmael to the bondage of Sinai-covenant of the law. vs. 24-25.

  2. Analogy of Isaac to Jerusalem and the children of promise. vs. 26-28.

  3. Analogy of “one born after the flesh and one born after the Spirit” vs. 29.

  4. Liberty in Christ. “So then brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.” vs.31.
