Seeing we have a Great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…Hebrews 4:14.

The High Priesthood in the Old Testament.

  1. The High Priest was the supreme religious leader of the Israelites beginning with Aaron the brother of Moses.

  2. The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sins of the whole congregation, but also for himself (Leviticus 4:3, 13).

  3. The most important duty of the high priest was to conduct the service on the Day of Atonement, the tenth day of the seventh month of every year. Only he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place behind the veil to stand before God. Having made a sacrifice for himself and for the people, he then brought the blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat. (Leviticus 16:14-15). He did this to make atonement for himself and the people.

The High Priesthood of Christ.

  1. Christ was designated by God the Father as High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:10. Melchizedek was “the priest of the Most High God that met and blessed Abraham.” Genesis 14:18. Melchizedek was the pre-incarnate Christ.

  2. “Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” Hebrews 4:14.

  3. Jesus is The Great High Priest because of His offering Himself for our sins once for all. Hebrews 9:26, 10:10 & 12.

  4. Jesus is “The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Revelation 13:8.

  5. Through Christ’s sacrifice for us, we are sanctified and set apart for Him. By entering God’s presence on our behalf, Christ has secured for us an “eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12).

  6. As the Apostle Paul has written, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5).

Jesus The Perfect High Priest. Hebrews 6:19-20.

  1. Jesus is the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul. A hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain. This is referencing the Holy of Holies in the Old Testament temple.

  2. He is saying that Jesus has entered that room, not in the temple, but in Heaven. He has gone straight to the throne room of God as our high priest, our representative, making him a sure hope in a world broken by sin.
