Sin and the Believer

Jesus as the Believer’s Advocate.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1.
Jesus Christ came to redeem and restore sinners to God. He suffered for sin by dying on the cross. Those that accept Him as Redeemer by placing their faith in Him are restored to God.
“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” Romans 6:12-14.
Believers may still sin because the old nature remains and tempts them to do wrong, but they must resist for they no longer have to sin. There are many in the Old Testament who are considered people of faith including Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sara, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Samson and David. Characteristics of faith include trust, obedience, love, perseverance, humility, hope, and self-control.
Believers are people of faith, have a new life, and are empowered by the Holy Spirit to resist sin. If a believer stumbles and sins, they “have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1.
Jesus’s farewell message to His Apostles promises He will send them a Helper-the Holy Spirit: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
