Mount Sinai Bible Events
Mount Sinai is referred to in the Bible as Mount Horeb, Mount Moriah, and The Mount of God.
Horeb is the ancient name for Mount Sinai. The same place known as Mount Moriah. It is later referred to as The Temple Mount.
Referenced to Mount Moriah:
God told Abraham to take his son Isaac to the land of Moriah to sacrifice him on the Mount he will show him. Genesis 22:1-4. Abraham tells his son that “God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.” Genesis 22:7-13.
Abraham called that place “Jehovah-Jira…The Mount of the Lord.” Genesis 22:14. Jehovah-Jira means the God who Sees.
The Abrahamic Covenant established. “In thy seed shall all the nations be blessed.” Genesis 22:15-18.
Solomon built the House of the Lord on Mount Moriah near Jerusalem. 2 Chronicles 3:1. It would be referrd to as the Temple Mount.
Reference to Mount Horeb:
Moses was tending the sheep for his father in law, the priest of Midian when he came near Mount Horeb. There he saw the Burning Bush. Exodus 3:1-8, 10.
Moses strikes the Rock at the base of Mount Horeb and water comes out of the Rock. Exodus 17:1, 3-6.
In the third month after departing Egypt, the Israelites arrive at the base of Mount Sinai. Moses went up the mountain where God spoke to him. Exodus 19:1-6.
And God gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18.
The Israelites made the golden calf at the base of Mount Horeb after Moses delayed his return. Exodus 32:1-8. Psalm 106:19.
When Moses comes down from the mountain, he sees the golden calf and was angered and he cast down the Tablets and broke them. Exodus 32:19.
Moses returned to the Lord on the Mount and pleads for the people. Exodus 32:31-32.
God instructs Moses to hew 2 tablets of stone, and God wrote the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai establishing The Old Covenant. Exodus 34:1.
Elijah headed to Horeb from Beersheba to escape from the wicked queen Jezebel. 1 Kings 19:1-14.
On Mount Horeb, the Lord tells Elijah to return to Damascus and annoint a new king for Syria and Israel, and Elisha a prophet to take his place. 1 Kings 19:15-16.
Mount Sinai is referred to as the Mountain of God.
Moses led the flock…and came to the “Mountain of God, even to Horeb.” Exodus 3:1.
Mount Sinai is succeeds by mount Zion: The Old Mosaic Covenant on Mount Sinai is based on the Law. It is succeeded by the New Covenant of Mount Zion, the city of the Living God, by Jesus the mediator of the New Covenant of Grace. Hebrews 12:18-24a.
