A Son’s Freedom

A SON’S FREEDOM.

Each person remembers being a child or has a child.

Each child passes through a rebellious stage-an attitude or disposition beginning with the first “no”. This peaks in mid to late adolescents.

The seeds of this rebellion leads to the demand for freedom.

  1. Feeling of independence-this begins with the child’s first step and ability to walk where the child wants to go.

  2. Each accomplishment thereafter is recognized and praised.

  3. Progressive independence is natural and may be a good thing.

  4. Independence is a free spirit that demands freedom.

Independence meets responsibility.

  1. Responsibilty demands self control.

  2. Lack of responsibility leads to depletion.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son. Luke 15:11-24.

The Son’s desire for freedom motivate him to ask his Father for his share of the inheritance.

  1. I do not have the freedom to taste life to the full.

  2. Some of the opportunities and experiences that I desire may never be mine.

  3. I need to express and assert my desire to be freed from responsibility.

The Father’s surprising response-He consents and gives him his share of the inheritance.

  1. You have the freedom of a son of the house. Freedom to come and go.

  2. I will guide you but not restrain you.

  3. The Father will patiently wait for his Son’s awakening and restoration.

The waiting Father.

  1. The son leaves his Father’s house and goes to a foreign land.

  2. After the son squanders his share of the inheritance, he is in severe need.

  3. He came to himself and decided to return to his father and be a servant.

  4. The father has been waiting for him, had compassion, ran and fell on his neck and welcomed him home.

  5. The Father restores the prodigal to full sonship and celebrates his return.
