Jesus’s Last Week Ministry

Below is the Message Audio. It is followed by Typed Message Notes.

The Ministry of Jesus in His last week before He was crucified is referred to by many as Holy Week.

The week began with Jesus’s Triumphal Entry. It is referred to as Palm Sunday and is one of the few events in the life of Jesus mentioned in all 4 Gospels including John 12:1-15. It fullfilled the prophecy in Zechariah. 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

The next key event is Jesus cleansing the Temple. Matthew 12:12-13 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

This was followed by Jesus delivering several parables including:

  1. Parable of the two sons (Matthew 21:28-32)

  2. Parable of the Vineyard (Matthew 21:33-39)

  3. Parable of the Wedding Banquet (Matthew 22:1-14)

  4. Parable of the Foolish Virgins (Matt. 25:1-13)

  5. Parable of the Servants and Talents (Matt 25:14-30)

  6. Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matt. 25:31-46)

The next day, Probably Wednesday, the Jewish leaders launched the plan to kill Jesus:

  1. “Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.” Luke 22:1-2.

  2. “Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. ‍And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.” Luke 22:3-6.

Next day was Passover Day-Thursday.

  1. After the Feast Jesus washes the disciples feet. “He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded” John 13:4-5.

  2. Jesus then identifies His betrayer. “And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.” John 14:18-21.

  3. Jesus launches The Lord’s Supper. “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. Matt. 26:26-30.

  4. Jesus leads his Disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of Mount of Olives late at night.

Next day Friday starts with Jesus and His Apostles in Gethsemane at and after midnight.

  1. After Jesus prays three timed in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Apostles are asleep. “Then He came the third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.” Mark 14:41-42.

  2. Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane. “And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely. As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. And they laid their hands on him and took him.” Mark 14:43-46.

  3. The Trials of Jesus: Jesus before Pilate. Mark 15:1-5. Jesus before Herod. Luke 23:6-12. Jesus before Pilate again. Mark 15:6-20.

  4. Jesus to Golgotha to be crucified. He was crucified at 9 AM. Matt. 27:31-34.

  5. One of the Thiefs on the Cross mocked Jesus at noon saying “if thou be Christ, save thyself and us.” Luke 23:39.

The other Thief rebuked him and said to Jesus “Lord remember me when Thou comest into Thy Kingdom. Jesus said to him: “Today thou shalt be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:40-43.

  6. Jesus gave up the ghost at 3 pm. After 6 hours on the cross, there was darkness over all the earth. Jesus “cried with a loud voice, he said, Father into thy hands I commend my spirit and gave up the ghost.” Luke 23:44-46.

  7. At 6 pm Joseph of Arimathea a godly man went to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus. He and Nicodemus took the body of Jesus and placed it in a borrowed tomb. John 19:38-42.

Sunday the women, the Apostle Peter and John go to visit the tomb and find it is empty. Jesus had risen from the dead. John 20:1-10.
